Gunning Reading Formula

Use this page to perform the calculations necessary for determining the Gunning reading formula. Follow the steps below, enter the information, then click on "Calculate" to complete the process.

  1. Count off approximately 100 words, counting to the end of a sentence. (Make sure you have at least 100 words.) Don't take this sample from headings, lists, etc.

  2. Actual total number of words:
  3. Count the total number of sentences in this selection.

  4. Total number of sentences:
  5. Count the "hard" words. A hard word is usually any word of three or more syllables. If a hard word appears more than once in the sample, only count it once.

  6. Total "hard" words:
